The Sovereign-class Super Star Destroyer was a huge 15-kilometer-long warship. In terms of scale, they could be seen as successors to the Eye of Palpatine and the Kuati Star Dreadnoughts that preceded the New Republic era.

They were to be the penultimate Imperial weapon, surpassed only by the Eclipse-class Super Star Destroyer. The Sovereign was essentially a smaller cousin to the Eclipse-class design, with fewer weapons, a slower hyperdrive, and a smaller complement of starfighters and crew. Nevertheless, the Sovereign-class ships were vastly larger than almost any other warships they might encounter, and designed to instill fear in any enemies of the Empire.

Fear. Fear is the simple emotion that the Emperor built his entire Empire upon. The Sovereign-class Super Star Destroyers were to be produced on a massive scale to overwhelm the New Republic, destroying it and any planets that they controlled.

The main weapon aboard the Sovereign-class Super Star Destroyer was the axial superlaser. A spine-mounted superlaser modeled on the main weapon of the Death Star itself. The Death Star's prime weapon was composed of eight individual lasers that could focus together, generating enough power to destroy an entire planet. By comparison, the Sovereign carries only a single laser, but recent focusing and generator advances make this ray much more powerful than the units used on the Death Star. The beam packs enough destructive power to shatter the most powerful planetary shields and devastate planets instantly.

The axial superlaser can be fired up to eight times per day at nominal charge and once per day at full charge. Imperial Gunners are some of the best trained fixed-mount weapon specialists in the Empire. Their advanced tactical combat training and enhanced targeting systems linked to their helmets make them extremely accurate and deadly foes.

Many Sovereigns were planned, with the first, Sovereign, undergoing construction at the time of the first defeat of the Emperor's clone. Only three additional ships were known to have been named at the time of the project's cancellation: Autarch, Heresiarch, and Despot. Whether any of these ships were actually built is unknown, but it is believed that all ships under construction were lost when Byss was accidentally destroyed by the Galaxy Gun.
