Star Wars Fanatic Camps Out

Jeff Tweiten lives on a periwinkle blue, fold-out futon on the sidewalk in front of the Cinerama Theatre.

He is not homeless, but camping out for 139 days. Waiting.

For Godot, you wonder? An organ transplant? The end of the world? Tweiten is waiting for "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith," which opens May 19.

Click here to read the full article from SeattlePI, which has a lengthy article and lots of facts about Jeff Tweiten.

Star Wars: Empire At War

GamesRadar posted an article discussing the newly announced Star Wars game Star Wars: Empire At War:

But what makes this venture into the Star Wars universe so fascinating is that the battle for control of the universe isn't broken up into a series of episodes or missions. Instead, the whole world continues with each victory or defeat tipping the scales in favour of either the Sith or the Alliance.

So as you capture and control each one of the 20 planets, its raw materials, skills and soldiers are added to your armoury and armour. And in this way Petroglyph hope to avoid those protracted 'resource building' problems that has slowed some other strategy games.

Hit the link above to read the full article. I remember seeing a screenshot for this a while back, but I don't remember where. I remember it looking almost like Age of Empires, but with a Star Wars twist, sort of like Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. Empire At War will be released on PC in the autumn.

Episode III Video Game Preview

Joystiq posted a review of the upcoming video game titled Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith:

The next installment of the Star Wars Trilogy is just around the corner. After decades of waiting to see how Anakin became Darth Vader, the wait is almost over. We’ll get hit with a lot of merchandise in the coming months, but none of it will hold our attention as much as the official game. I was lucky enough to get a chance to check out the Playstation 2 version of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith this week, and I’m happy to report it looks great.

Seeing previews like this is always a bit tough. It’s based on a movie that you want to see, so you’re stuck between wanting to know everything and wanting to know nothing. While the fine folks at Lucas have NDAs tattooed to their eyelids, that still doesn’t make it any easier. For instance, the demo broke ( I believe accidentally) into a film clip for a split second. Two of us averted our eyes, and looked over our shoulders. Yes, we should be blasted as nerds and demerited seven journalist points. But I, for one, will not be tainted.

Be sure to click here to read the full article and see some amazing screenshots. Obviously, there are spoilers at the Joystiq page.

The Machines of The Phantom Menace

Popular Mechanics has posted an awesome article on their site which talks about the machines of Star Wars:

Crammed into the subway-tight elevator, it occurs to us that there isn't a 12-year-old boy on the planet who wouldn't trade his best sneakers to be in our shoes. "Half of the people who work here don't even know this place exists," says our escort as she turns a brass key in a lock on the control panel. "They don't know there is a third floor." Even the CIA marks its elevator buttons. But then, they're not hiding a billion dollars' worth of alien technology. "Star Wars" creator George Lucas has invited POPULAR MECHANICS to Skywalker Ranch, just north of San Francisco, and given us unprecedented access to the Lucasfilm design studio. For the next few hours we will be lifting the hoods and kicking the tractor beams of the machines of "Star Wars: Episode I–The Phantom Menace."

Be sure to click on the link above to read the full, and I might add, interesting, article!

4th Annual Star Wars Fan Film Awards

Atomfilms and Lucasfilm Ltd. today announced the 4th Annual Star Wars Fan Film Awards with an official call for submissions. The contest is now accepting fan-made Star Wars spoofs and documentaries until its March 8 submission deadline.

Entrants in this year’s Fan Film Awards will compete for the George Lucas Selects Award, which comes with a cash prize of $2,000 and the recognition of George Lucas, who selects the competition’s best film. Winners of all prizes will be announced at Lucasfilm’s massive Star Wars Celebration III fan event, which will take place April 21-24 in Indianapolis, Indiana, just weeks before the long-awaited theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.

The official support and participation of Lucasfilm have made the Star Wars Fan Film Awards the world’s premier fan film event. Finalists in past competitions have been viewed over 10,000,000 times at AtomFilms’ Fan Film Awards Web site, and this year’s event is expected to attract both a record number of submissions and a record audience.

4th Annual Star Wars Fan Film Awards timeline:
- Deadline for submission is March 8, 2005. Visit http://starwars.atomfilms.com for submission guidelines
- All 2005 finalists will be announced on March 29, 2005 for viewing and online voting to determine the Audience Choice award
- Winners will be announced at Star Wars Celebration III on Friday night, April 22 2005.

“Lucasfilm is delighted work with AtomFilms once again on the fourth Star Wars Fan Film Awards,” said Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm’s head of fan relations. “George Lucas is a great supporter of independent film and participates in the Star Wars Fan Film Awards because he wants to encourage a new generation of filmmakers to develop their talent.”

“Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon unlike any other,” said Scott Roesch, VP Marketing AtomShockwave Corp. “We’re very happy to be working with Lucasfilm to provide this unique opportunity for Star Wars fans and up-and-coming filmmakers.”

Submission instructions and past Fan Film Award winners are currently available on the Fan Film Awards site.

Star Wars Voted Top For Effects

The opening sequence to the original 1977 Star Wars movie has been voted the best special effect in cinema history.

The sight of the huge Imperial Star Destroyer outshines anything from contemporary cinema, including The Matrix, an SFX magazine poll says.

The climax of the 1933 King Kong film came second, with the spider head from 1982's The Thing in third.

"It was the Big Bang of modern special effects," said SFX editor Dave Golder of the Star Wars opening.

"Star Wars winning the best special effects sequence ever shows just how significant the film is to movie fans," he added.

The opening sequence sees a rebel ship racing into the distance pursued by blasts of gun fire.

Then its pursuer, a vast ship, comes into view, taking moviegoers' breath away when the film first hit the big screen.

"Even now, nothing beats the feeling you get when you see this huge flying spaceship coming across the screen - which is breathtakingly enormous," said Mr Golder.
