The Official Star
Wars Site has announced a few Oscar nominations. Unfortunately Attack
of the Clones was not nominated for best movie. There were no
nominations for sound (Think about those great seismic charges!), or
music, (Not for John Williams outstanding work yet again?), and most
any other caption you can think of. The only area of nomination was
for Visual Effects.
So visually complex was Star Wars: Episode II Attack of
the Clones that four of Industrial Light & Magic's most
talented digital artists share the nomination for Best Visual
Effects.
Animation Director Rob Coleman supervised the animation of the
film's cast of digital characters, from the countless clone and
droid soldiers, to memorable performances by the unforgettable and
classic character of Yoda. This is Coleman's second nomination,
having garnered the first for The Phantom Menace.
Among Visual Effects Supervisor John Knoll's contribution to
Episode II include the dizzying Coruscant speeder chase, the
creature-filled Geonosis execution arena, and the Jedi-packed arena
battle that followed. This is Knoll's second nomination; he was also
nominated for his work on Episode I.
Pablo Helman's unit oversaw the creation of Kamino, both its
serene interiors and storm-battered exteriors. His crew also oversaw
the creation of Naboo, Tatooine and Coruscant environments. This is
Helman's first nomination.
Ben Snow's unit oversaw the creation of the chaotic Geonosian
droid factory, as well as the epic first battle of the Clone Wars
that marked the film's finale. This is Snow's second nomination; he
was previously nominated for his work on Pearl Harbor. For
