Homing Beacon #185

The latest Homing Beacon has arrived and today we talk about you being a star at Celebration IV. Turn on your dazzling charm, perform your best Star Wars talent, and be prepared to walk away with the glory at Star Wars Celebration IV this May. Celebrity Master of Ceremonies Jay Laga'aia will host Star Wars Celebrity on the Concourse Stage at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and you could be there, performing for your fellow fans from around the world.

Show off your talent to the world right now by posting a video online! If you're heading to Celebration IV, this is your audition to be part of the talent show. If you can't make the trip, your audition may be shown to the audience in attendance. Audition performances must be limited to 90 seconds each, but up to three minutes will be allowed for finalists who make the cut to perform at Celebration IV.

What kind of performance qualifies? Anything that is a talent, as long as it is one person performing, it fits a Star Wars theme, your audition is 90 seconds or less, and you comply to common sense rules of decency and good taste for a family-attended show.

The very best entries will be chosen to perform on the Concourse Stage in what are scheduled to be semi-final rounds, and in a spectacular final round in front of celebrity judges who will not be shy about telling you what they think of your performance. It will be fun, and it will be your chance to shine.

The very best performer, voted by the panel of judges at Celebration IV, will be awarded an extremely rare, life-sized stormtrooper statue from the Lucas Licensing Archives, created by Don Post. One of a very few made, this stormtrooper will be shipped to the winner's home after the show. There will be prizes for those who place, and for finalists, too!

To begin, register on YouTube.com to set up an account. Then once you have your video clip ready to upload, go to http://youtube.com/my_videos_upload and upload your movie. Though YouTube.com allows videos up to 10 minutes in length, remember that your audition should only be up to 90 seconds long. Leave 'em wanting more and save your energy for the stage in L.A!

When you upload your audition video make sure to write the tag "starwarscelebrity" so we can find it! Last day to post your entry for consideration for the Celebration IV Star Wars Celebrity show is Friday, May 4 at 12 noon PDT.

Featured Artist Craig Burt-Painting by Numbers 25

Featured Artist Craig Burt has provided us with a breakdown of one of his paintings that provides us with a look into how the picture came about.

2Troubled Trio progressive.jpg (159212 bytes)
"Troubled Trio"

Here is some of the article created by Craig:

Anyone remember those Episode II Selects from many years ago? Well this painting's direction came from one of those.

1. Is the Select I'm referring to. The similarities to the painting are obvious.

2. Is a photo from some more 'junk mail' that was the basis for the picture. Looking at the images I guess I should have number 1 as number 2 because that's more the direction of the process, but it's done now and I'm not going to bother changing it.

Be sure to read the rest of the article about "Troubled Trio" in the Painting by Numbers section. Thanks Craig for another great walkthrough of how this image came about! Enjoy!

Kevin Graham - Official Topps Artist

Kevin Graham, one of our Featured Artists got the word last week that he will become an official artist for Topps. This is fantastic news because I know Kevin has wanted to do this for a long time. Here is he had to say:

"I was informed that I can officially announce I will be working on Topps 30th Anniversary Card set. Although the regular cards for the set will feature all six movies the Sketch Cards for the set will only be from Star Wars - A New Hope . I will be doing 206 (6 I get to keep) sketch cards for the set, mostly color cell cards, highly detailed pointillism cards, and some regular painted cards. I have been waiting forever to get the chance to work on an Official Star Wars project and finally get the chance, and in doing so I am now an Official Lucas Artist. Wahooo. For those interested in the set I can promise you some great work from me on this set. I'm not saying I didn't care about other sets I worked on but this really means a lot to me and going all out to do my best. Hope you enjoy the set and will post more information and images of my work when I am allowed to. Thanks again to everyone who has supported me and my work."

Other Projects

"I am awaiting word on several other Sketch Card projects that will be coming out this year and will post details as they arrive. Keep a look out for the Wizard of Oz set that is coming out this Spring, I did 300 sketch cards for the Oz set. Thanks again and will email an update soon. Don't forget to check out my site: www.kevingrahamart.com."

Many Congratulations to you Kevin! We will keep you up-to-date on the set as more information arrives.

Hyperspace - What Benefit?

As many of you already know, Hyperspace and the Insider magazine recently parted ways leaving those that are part of the "Fan Club" wondering what benefits we will still have. The Official Site has been bragging about all the new things we will see as members, but I as a member are yet to see anything I can actually use.

Many of the "new" benefits that have been implemented are for the upcoming Celebration IV, which will be impossible for me and most other Hyperspace members to get to. Then, yesterday I noticed that advertisements were appearing on my screen while I was visiting the the Official Site. I originally thought that I was just not logged in as a Hyperspace member which would normally eliminate any advertisements. Much to my dismay, I realized I was logged in, but the advertisements were still there.

One of the big benefits I actually see as a paying Hyperspace member was not seeing advertisements. Well, I guess that benefit is no more! Which leads me to ask myself and others, what benefit is Hyperspace anymore for the common every day user? The ease of having the Insider coupled with Hyperspace is gone, advertisements are back, etc. I am paying for what again?!?!?

Another Celebration IV Exclusive Action Figure

C4 Exclusive Figure2.jpg (46274 bytes)The Official Star Wars Site has announced that another exclusive action figure will be available at Celebration IV! Ralph McQuarrie's early illustration of Darth Vader battling a Rebel hero -- a figure who would ultimately evolve into the character of Luke Skywalker -- remains a powerful image that many fans count among McQuarrie's best. In commemoration of Star Wars' 30th anniversary, and to acknowledge the vision and talent of one of the saga's most influential architects, Hasbro will be offering this stunning figure at two events that Star Wars fans won't want to miss this summer -- Celebration IV and Celebration Europe! Learn more about how to get the figures and what art inspired them.

Galactic Voyage/AllTroops Partnership

Today I am pleased to announce a partnership with AllTroops and Galactic Voyage. AllTroops has been an affiliate of Galactic Voyage, but we are going to take it one step further by offering new Star Wars Collecting Tools here at Galactic Voyage. Also I would like to offer a big welcome to the whole AllTroops crew and their fans!

The success of Galactic Voyage and other sites linking into one community forum at the SW Forums has been great. It also led me to believe that we are better for the Star Wars community when we play off our strengths instead of trying to be and end all, be all super mega Star Wars site as some try to do.

What does this mean for you?

Galactic Voyage will be directly linking to the Collection Tools and Product Guides of AllTroops in the Features section of the main menu. At AllTroops, they will be linking back to Galactic Voyage as their information resource. Together, we hope that you will be able to find all the information you need about Star Wars and about the collectibles you want to track and own.

Galactic Voyage fans will see the same seamless transition from the Features menu to these tools like they do to the SW Forums. I think this partnership will be great for the fans and both our sites.

What are the 'AllTroops Product Guides?'

The dynamic product guide is continually updated with new products on their release. The guide features everything collectors could need to know about a product. The guide is divided first by the "scale" or toy line, then by the series. New products and updated products can be found by using the "New Product Updates" feature, which automatically sorts out the newest and pending releases - always from 30 days ago to pending.

What are the 'AllTroops Collection Tools?'

The product guide drives the Interactive Collection Tool - a database-driven feature that lets you store your collection online. Unlike most existing collection checklists, the AllTroops system allows you to store more than just checkboxes for HAVES and WANTS - allowing users to enter the loose/carded/boxed configurations, variation details, quantities for multiples as well as whether you have the piece in question available for trade!

How do I get started?

To get started with these new tools you will first need to register. There is a Standard Membership that is Free and a Premium Membership that is $5.00 per year. You can see the benefits of each type of membership when you follow the link.

We hope that you will enjoy using these tools as much as I do to see what's new and track your collections. Happy collecting!

July 2007 Comics

Star Wars Legacy 14.jpg (44810 bytes)The Official Star Wars Site has provided a look at more Dark Horse Comics for Star Wars fans this July. Cade Skywalker has done some bad things in his life, but possibly none worse than turning over a captive Jedi -- Master Hosk -- to the Sith. Now he has come to Coruscant to atone for his sins, and hopefully set Hosk free. But Hosk isn't the only one Cade has crossed, and a chance run-in with a couple of old "friends" may send him on a new path. Take note! This issue begins a story that will reveal the secret behind Legacy's most mysterious character, the self-proclaimed emperor of the Sith Empire, Darth Krayt!

Star Wars: Legacy #14, the first part of the six-part "Krayt" story-arc, is by John Ostrander, Jan Duursema, Dan Parsons and Brad Anderson with cover art by Travis Charest. It is scheduled for release on July 11.

A secret of tremendous importance to the Empire lies hidden on the planet Ahakista, and when a local civil war threatens it, Darth Vader will take its protection into his own hands!

A ragtag team of Rebel agents have discovered the Empire's secret on Ahakista thanks to an Imperial officer with an agenda of her own. Yet if they are to do anything about it, they'll need the help of the locals, who, embroiled in a civil war, are none too eager to take the Empire head on.

Meanwhile, Darth Vader grows tired of this backwater planet distracting him from more pressing matters. For his adversaries this means one thing -- death at the hands of the Sith Lord!

Star Wars: Rebellion #8 is by Rob Williams, Michael Lacombe and Wil Glass with cover art by Ryan Sook. It is scheduled for release on July 11.

A new story arc begins in the days of the ancient Jedi as a megalomaniacal businessman unveils a plot that will have dire consequences for the Republic, the Mandalorians, and the galaxy they're warring over! Lord Adasca, head of the massive corporation Adascorp, has set in motion a series of events that will change the face of the war between the Republic and the Mandalorians. He has arranged a meeting aboard his flagship the Arkanian Legacy, and as each invitee arrives, the nature of his game and its stakes for the galaxy are revealed.

Elsewhere on the ship, the elderly Camper and his young protector Jarael remained separated, each growing more concerned about the fate of the other. What are Lord Adasca's plans for them? If only their friend, fugitive Padawan Zayne Carrick, would show up to work some of his Jedi magic!

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #19 is by John Jackson Miller, Harvey Tolibao and Michael Atiyeh with cover art by Chris Warner. It is scheduled for release on July 25.

Each month, the Star Wars 30th Anniversary Collection series will bring readers a limited-edition hardcover. Available only through Direct Market retail outlets, each volume's print run is limited to initial orders. For September, look forward to Darklighter by Paul Chadwick, Douglas Wheatley, Chris Chuckry and cover art by Kilian Plunkett. This is the story of Biggs Darklighter -- boyhood friend of Luke Skywalker, Imperial pilot, and hero of the Rebellion. It is scheduled for release on September 5.
