Star Wars 30th Anniversary Today

Happy birthday Star Wars! It is hard to believe that it has been 30 years since I first sat down in the theater as young boy to watch the first showing of Star Wars in 1977. I still remember to this day the opening crawl giving me chills! (It sometimes still does) Seeing the Star Destroyer chasing the Rebel Blockade Runner was just ominous at that time. It seemed to go on for ever because it was so large. The introduction of R2-D2 and C-3PO, the first battle sequence, and then the ultimate villain enters ... Darth Vader! The first few minutes of that film really changed the rest of my life in a way I never thought it would. It touched me and many others so deeply to the core that we are still die-hard fans to this day 30 years later. "Star Wars" as it was originally known (Not Episode IV or A New Hope) is to this day still my favorite of all the episodes and I believe it is because of the marking impression it left on my when I was 8. To commemorate the true release of "Star Wars" I have provided you with the original crawl as it looked back in 1977. I usually don't like to say this because it can be seen as nerdy, but today seems fitting. May the Force be with you always!

Drag-and-Drop Scenes to come with the new SW.com

With all the Star Wars news coming out of Celebration IV, this one was too good not to share here. Over at Ain't It Cool they've just posted a scoop on how Lucasfilm and the newly relaunched StarWars.com will help wannabe filmmakers create their own chapters from a galaxy, far, far, away...

A few months back, scifi.com launched a feature which enabled users to assemble their own BATTLESTAR GALACTICA movies by mixing home-made material with visual effects and music content from the series (provided through the site).

When this happened, I thought it would be exceedingly fun if Lucas and his minions did the same thing for STAR WARS. I mean, there are a ton of cool fan movies out there (some of them surprisingly well done). And, presumably, there are an infinite number of folks (like myself) who'd like to goof around with making a STAR WARS film of their own...but lack resolve, resources, or both (like myself).

As it happens,! this very feature is about to be incorporated into the impending relaunch of The Official STAR WARS Website. On Friday, the redesigned site will deploy with an array of new features. One of these features allows users to integrate their own home-made material with 250 scenes/musical selection from all six STAR WARS movies. And, in an uncharacteristic frenzy of fan officialization, the site will also present a bevy of STAR WARS fan films...some of which have never been distributed on the Internet (is such a thing possible?)

Much of this is being made possible by a company called Eyespot, whose browser based, drag & drop editing application should make assembling material quite accessible & user friendly.

Instead of regurgitating a press release, I'll share more about this by giving you the actual press release itself. There are more details within this piece (including the reveal of some mini-documentaries about the making of the films, etc! .), so read on.

The May 25 relaunch is just the start of a series of exciting new additions to StarWars.com. In the coming months, continually added features will give the global Star Wars fan community unprecedented new content, new games, and new ways to share the 10,000-page site, which is visited by millions of users every month.

“We want the new StarWars.com to empower fans to make and watch Star Wars videos, play games, and share their love of Star Wars like no other site on the Internet,” said Bill Gannon, Director of Online Operations for Lucasfilm Ltd.. “StarWars.com already features blogs, special in-depth sections for kids and video gaming, the Hyperspace fan site, and the comprehensive StarWarsShop.com, making it unlike any entertainment themed website.”

Innovation is nothing new to StarWars.com – the website has always been a leader in utilizing the newest Internet technologies. “In 1999, we were the first to host the online premiere of a trailer, which was the biggest online event the Internet had seen to that point, and nearly a decade later we are ensuring that StarWars.com will remain one of the most innovative and fun entertainment sites anywhere on the web,” Ulin said.

StarWars.com is the Internet’s only official 365-day-a-year entertainment destination for Star Wars fans and is produced by Lucas Online, a division of Lucasfilm Ltd., as a digital destination for entertainment, education, reference and e-commerce for Lucasfilm’s intellectual properties and businesses. Featured Artist Craig Burt-Painting by Numbers 28

Featured Artist Craig Burt has provided us with a breakdown of one of his paintings that provides us with a look into how the picture came about.

"Tatooine Twilight"

Here is some of the article created by Craig:

This picture is again one of the early paintings and one of the few of those that I liked at the time.

1. This small photo is from another piece of junk-mail; a sportswear catalogue if I remember. The potential of it was very obvious the first time I saw it and eventually I got around to using it.

Be sure to read the rest of the article about "Tatooine Twilight" in the Painting by Numbers section. Thanks Craig for another great walkthrough of how this image came about! Enjoy!

Master Replicas Star Wars License to End in 2007

The Official Star Wars Site has announced that the license granted to one of Lucasfilm's collectibles licensees, Corgi International Ltd., will unfortunately expire at the end of 2007 due to both parties being unable to agree on terms for a renewal of the license. Corgi has made replicas of iconic Star Wars lightsabers, weapons, helmets, and other props under the brand name of Master Replicas.

"We deeply regret that we and Corgi could not come to terms on a new agreement," said Howard Roffman, President of Lucas Licensing. "We had very much hoped to continue working with them. We know our fans and collectors really love this category and we are working as quickly as possible to bring in new licensees to replace both Master Replicas and Cards Inc."

Late last year, through a merger and acquisition, Master Replicas and Cards Inc., a U.K. distributor and manufacturer of collectibles and also a Lucasfilm Star Wars licensee, became a part of Corgi International Ltd.

I guess on a positive note, now the Master Replicas items should increase in value a little quicker. I really liked their products and I hope they find another vendor that will have the same level of quality.

August 2007 Comics

Star Wars Rebellion 9.jpg (40029 bytes)The Official Star Wars Site has provided a look at more Dark Horse Comics for Star Wars fans this August. The crimelord Raze has put a bomb inside Wyl Tarson's skull, which is why Wyl now leads a ragtag team on a suicide mission to compromise one of the Empire's greatest secrets!

In the streets of the planet Ahakista, Darth Vader wages ruthless war against a local militia that has been unwelcoming to the Imperial presence there. Meanwhile, below the surface, Wyl and his crew try to infiltrate an Imperial stronghold through ancient tunnels. Just when unlikely success seems within their grasp, a revelation by one of the group changes everything.

Fateful decisions, shocking discoveries . . . this the hottest issue of Star Wars: Rebellion yet! Issue #9 is by Rob Williams, Michel Lacombe and Wil Glass, with a cover by Ryan Sook. It is due out on August 8.

A defining moment in the history of the galaxy arrives as the Republic and the Mandalorians meet face-to-face to discuss an offer that adds up to one thing -- victory for one, defeat for the other!

Sinister billionaire Lord Adasca is the organizer of this fateful rendezvous, a mastermind with grand plans for his race, the Arkanians, and his corporation, Adascorp. What Adasca hasn't counted on is the feisty Jarael, her elderly companion Camper, or their fugitive Padawan friend Zayne Carrick trying to stop these megalomaniacal machinations despite impossible odds. Of course, as soon as the three figure out how to escape Adasca's custody without getting blasted by a dozen HK-24 assassin droids, that's exactly what they're gonna do!

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #30 is by John Jackson Miller, Bong Dazo, and Michael Atiyeh and features a cover by Chris Warner. It is due out on August 29.

At long last, the identity of Darth Krayt is revealed! In a reckless bid to right one of his many past wrongs, Cade Skywalker has become a prisoner of the Sith. It's a banner day for Emperor Darth Krayt, who hopes that Skywalker's abilities will complete Krayt's longtime quest to restore his own power.

But the other Sith are less certain of their Master's motives. And there are others within the Empire who would rather see Cade dead than a pawn of the Emperor.

And Cade himself is none too happy about his situation. But what can he do? He turned his back on every friend who might come to his aid. He's made bad choices, and now he has to live -- or die -- with them!

Star Wars: Legacy #15, the second part of the six-part "Claws of the Dragon" storyline, is by John Ostrander, Jan Duursema, Dan Parsons, and Brad Anderson, with cover art by Travis Charest. It is scheduled for release on August 8.

In the last days of the Clone Wars, Jedi Master K'Kruhk finds his fate altered by Order 66 in ways he could not have imagined. Now it is not just his own life that depends on his skills, but the lives of many.

Elsewhere in the galaxy, Bomo Greenbark and the crew of the smuggler vessel UhumelÈ are being pursued by the Empire, even as they head for a potentially dangerous rendezvous.

Two separate tracks, each leading to one impossible choice that will change the futures of everyone involved! New, unexplored territory following Revenge of the Sith!

Star Wars: Dark Times #6, the first of the five-part "Parallels" story-arc is by Mick Harrison and Dave Ross. It is scheduled for release on August 29.

Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia face off against Darth Vader over an ancient artifact of legendary power! Deep in the swamplands of the planet Mimban lies a powerful crystal, capable of giving its possessor such mastery over the Force as to be nearly invincible. In the right hands, it could save the galaxy. In the wrong hands, it could destroy it! With the explosion of the first Death Star still reverberating through the cosmos, Luke and Leia will find that the war they thought they won was only a battle, and that the dark side of the Force still stalks the galaxy.

This 30th Anniversary hardcover volume (eighth in the series) is available only through Direct Market retail outlets, each volume's print run is limited to initial orders and will not be reprinted. Star Wars: Splinter of the Mind's Eye is by Terry Austin, Chris Sprouse, and James Sinclair and features cover art by Duncan Fegredo. It is scheduled for release on October 3.

The next volume in the Star Wars Omnibus series goes back in the time -- 5,000 years in to the Star Wars past and back to the 1990s -- with the Tales of the Jedi series. Discover the earliest known stories of the Jedi and the Sith in this massive 440-page collection! Five thousand years before Luke Skywalker's successful assault on the Death Star, the Sith Lord Marka Ragnos ruled the galaxy. That is, until his death ignited a battle for ascension that would spell the end for his empire -- and nearly the entire galaxy! It would be another thousand years before two young Jedi novices Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider would rise for the cause of justice, first in the case of a Jedi-killing Hutt, and then against a dark Jedi spirit threatening to engulf an entire planet!

Containing the Tales of the Jedi stories "The Golden Age of the Sith," "The Fall of the Sith Empire," "Knights of the Old Republic," and "The Freedon Nadd Uprising," this humongous omnibus is the ultimate introduction to the ancient history of the Star Wars universe! It is scheduled for release on October 24.

The battle for the fate of the galaxy is on, and you've got a front seat! The Clone Wars have spread to every corner of the Star Wars universe, bringing with it more death-defying Jedi rescues, more terrifying monster attacks, and more planet-shaking confrontations between armies of droids and clones! Featuring four new all-ages adventures, this volume is jam-packed with only the most awesome heroes and most dastardly villains locked in a conflict of epic proportions!

Amazing action, blazing lightsabers, and thrill-a-minute plot twists, every Star Wars fan is sure to love this full-tilt collection of stories told in the same stripped down stylization as Cartoon Network's micro-series! The ninth volume of Clone Wars Adventures, featuring the creative talents of Matthew and Shawn Fillbach and more, is due out on October 17.

Also due out in October is the Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones photo comic. Ten years after The Phantom Menace, a faction of political separatists led by former Jedi Knight Count Dooku attempts to assassinate Senator Padmé Amidala. As Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker try to discover the identity of the assassin, they uncover an insidious plot to destroy the Republic. In development exclusively for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system by U.K.-based Rebellion, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron continues the immensely successful Battlefront series, which has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide since its introduction in 2004.

The only original Star Wars Battlefront experience of 2007, Renegade Squadron delivers a new way for players to experience their favorite Star Wars battles any way -- and anywhere -- they want. The game presents new battles and missions found through a never-before-told story, as well as an unprecedented wealth of personalization and customization options. Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is the previously untold story of a ragtag ensemble of battle-hardened rogues and scoundrels assembled by Han Solo. Gathered to execute some of the most secretive operations in the Rebel Alliance's war against the Galactic Empire, the Renegade Squadron participates in battles spanning the galaxy. From the Valley of the Sith on Korriban to a dogfight in space through the remains of Alderaan, Solo directs the team on missions of sabotage, rescue and retrieval.

In Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, robust customization options replace the class system seen in previous Star Wars Battlefront titles, allowing for millions of possible unique combatants. With weapons, equipment and abilities that players select themselves, no two allies will likely ever look or perform exactly the same.

The game also boasts expanded multiplayer options for the PSP system. Up to 16 players will be able to compete against each other over the Internet and eight via the PSP system's ad-hoc wireless connection.
