New Star Wars Packaging

At next week's San Diego Comic-Con International, where Star Wars licensees such as Hasbro and LEGO plan to reveal some of their product lines for 2007, fans will get an eye-full of exciting new packaging designs that celebrate 30 years of Star Wars fandom.

For the highly visible Hasbro action figure line, different pieces of artwork were devised for each figure's cardback, and discreet bits of text citing the saga's 30-year legacy, chapter title, and "A long time ago..." slogan were inserted. In addition to striking new graphics, the vehicle boxes also received an added architectural enhancement -- an angled corner.

These items look like a cross between the latest Saga line and the Revenge of the Sith line. You may have also noted the circular pattern on the figure cardback which could possible be a location for a 30th anniversary coin like they did back with the old Power of the Jedi figures. We will have to wait and see.

Hyperspace's the Secrets of Star Wars 07 Update

As we reported earlier, Hyperspace members get glimpses at the secrets that 2007 holds. It is a new image series, rich with explosive and intriguing concept art, is your first look at next year's biggest Star Wars surprise. These pieces of art come from the next generation Star Wars video game coming out in 2007/2008 and it will blow your socks off!

The latest image is very revealing because it features a well known Jedi who was believed to be dead. This is not really the case because the movies never showed this person die. Only in cut scenes was this person's fate sealed. Who will be back and alive in the Expanded Universe? Follow the link to the Cut Scenes Section to see who our returning character will be!

Craig Burt's Luke Look

Craig Burt has provided another great new painting to the Featured Artist section! Here is a word from Craig:

"In some spare time I've decided to fiddle with acrylics - a paint that I've not liked in the past - to try and find a technique that will work. So I'll send this character study of Luke as a pilot to put in the gallery. Its nothing more than a painting in the style of the RPG characters I do."

Craig has been creating characters for a RPG site as of late and this is the style in which they have been created. It is really cool stuff! Thanks Craig! Also, be sure to see the rest of his outstanding gallery of work with Craig Burt's Paintings, Painting by Numbers, and also Craig Burt's Cartoons! You can find other great work at the Featured Artists section. Enjoy!

Fan Choice Figure Winner

The announcement comes from Hasbro in the latest ToyFare issue #109:

“A few issues back, we had you vote on the next Star Wars Fan Choice figure. Well, the votes have been tallied and the winner is… Quinlan Vos! Or he would be if he weren’t already getting made. Let us explain: Vos is already slated to show up in Hasbro’s new line of Star Wars comic two-packs, which kicks off this September with Kir Kanos (another high-ranking Fan Choice character) and Carnor Jax. The set will be exclusive to Entertainment Earth, the Star Wars Shop and the Hasbro Toy Shop and will come with a copy of Crimson Empire #6. Then, in 2007, the line will go to the mass market, bringing to life many of Dark Horse Comics biggest SW superstars, including Quinlan Vos and Mara Jade. And since the number-one Fan Choice figure is already in production- as part of a two pack, no less- that means that the real winner is number-two figure, Darth Revan! So look for Revan to appear on a regular card in Wave 5 of the 2007 Star Wars Saga figures (scheduled to come out in June), and check back here for regular updates as the figure is developed.”

New Fan Club President

The Official Star Wars Site has announced the winner of the race for the Fan Club President. The results are in and Dustin Roberts has been named the new President of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club. I thought that USCWANNABE was way ahead on this, but Dustin has been chosen.

Dustin will be given a guest editor position for an upcoming issue of Star Wars Insider magazine, as well as a personal profile printed in Star Wars Insider. He'll also join the ranks of the VIPs on starwars.com blogs and message boards, and will receive a Star Wars collectibles gift package and more.

Roberts, 33, lives and works in Cincinnati, Ohio. Always a huge fan of the original Star Wars trilogy, his love of the toys and collecting habits were rekindled in 1995 when he started to see Star Wars action figures in stores again, manufactured by Kenner. Dustin's contributions to the online Star Wars community include involvement with many prominent fan-based websites including: Yakface.com, Nerf-herder.com, Rebelscum.com, TheForce.net, R2D2central.com, and even a brief stint at the official website as a collecting forum moderator. Nowadays, Dustin concentrates on collecting news coverage for both Rebelscum and TheForce.net, while also continually updating his ever-growing R2-D2 collection focus at R2D2central.com.

Roberts will soon be jetting his way to sunny San Diego to attend Comic-Con International on behalf of the Star Wars Fan Club. Hyperspace will be providing exclusive coverage from the convention, including audio and video coverage of the event.

Homing Beacon #165

The latest Homing Beacon has arrived and today we get to talk about Jar Jar Binks. As the multi-talented artist who provided the voice and real world reference for the computer-generated prequel character Jar Jar Binks, actor Ahmed Best used his expertise in physical comedy for the role. In addition to his dance training, Best says that he drew most of his inspiration from comedic icons both real and imaginary.

"The major influence for Jar Jar was a lot of Buster Keaton -- his moves and antics," Best says. "But as far as comedy and timing, for me it was Bugs Bunny. That's where I got most of my comic timing. I'm a big Bugs Bunny fan, and a lot of the reactions and looks would come from the whole Looney Tunes kind of feel. But when we first started doing it, George Lucas wanted a Buster Keaton-like character for Episode I. And there were a couple of Buster Keaton movies that we were inspired by for some of the scenes, especially in the army scene in Episode I -- the final battle with the droids and the Gungans."

More than just comic relief, Best believes Jar Jar manages to exhibit many laudable traits. "I think his greatest quality is his honesty," Best says. "Whether you like the character or not, he is what he is. There are no pretenses, and there is nothing else other than what he is. He just wants to do good all the time, and he's not a character that has any secrets or a dark side."

Having the one character known completely for his dark side as a close friend isn't easy. "It's hard to say what Jar Jar thinks of Anakin because he has been with Anakin ever since he was nine years old," Best explains. "And he's seen Anakin grow up to discover his powers and lose his family. They've been kind of like, dare I say, brothers, in the whole struggle. So when Anakin was being influenced by Palpatine, I'm sure Jar Jar was a bit put off, maybe a little scared for Anakin, maybe a little protective. But there's really nothing that Jar Jar could do about it."
