Topps Star Wars
Cards |
The Official Star Wars Site has
provided a look at upcoming Star Wars cards from Topps! Bring your card
collection full circle with the long-anticipated release from Topps -- the Star
Wars Evolution: Update Edition, due out this summer.
When Topps first
released the Star Wars: Evolution set in 2001, they took collectors on a journey
down memory lane with cards that paid homage to the classic Star Wars experience
by connecting it to the ongoing saga. The first set covered the classic and
Episode I characters, with preview shots in the rare Evolution insert cards of
some of the main Episode II characters.
Now that the film saga is
complete, Star Wars Evolution: Update Edition includes many Episode II and III
characters to round out the collection. The All-Foil Character Series also
features the main original trilogy characters in looks not featured in the first
set. The main set consists of 90 cards, featuring mostly characters. There will
also be a small subset of creatures as well as ships and vehicles that have a
distinctive personality themselves such as the Millennium Falcon, Slave I and
the Death Star.
"This is a product we've wanted to do for quite a while
now," says Topps editor and project manager Matthew Saunders. "The first
Evolution set was a huge success. It was not only our first-ever character set,
but also our first-ever saga set, in that it featured for the first time a
blending, or a unifying, of the original trilogy characters with the prequel
characters. It was one of the first Star Wars products, if not the first, that
directly acknowledged that these characters were all part of the same universe,
and drew connections between them. As these cards had two front images -- a main
one and a secondary one -- we were able to show Episode I Obi-Wan, for example,
as the main image with a secondary image of the original trilogy
Obi-Wan."
"However at the time the first set came out in 2001, Episode II
and III hadn't been released yet," Saunders continues. "So, because of that
whole space/time thing we all have to contend with, we couldn't do the entire
saga. We did as much as we could at that point and, due to its overwhelming
success, made a strong mental note to revisit the brand down the road, following
the release of Episode III."
With the Update Edition, characters are
still the main focus, which Saunders says will always be the main appeal of the
cards for collectors. "A large part of what makes Star Wars so successful are
the characters," Saunders explains. "It seems like an overly obvious thing to
say, but we all love and identify with them, whether it be the farm boy who
wants to be a hero, the scoundrel with a heart of gold or the mysterious Dark
Lord of the Sith. If those characters hadn't spoken to us when Star Wars first
came out, we wouldn't be talking here today. People love Luke, Han, Darth Vader,
Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda and all the rest, and that's what this set celebrates. We
hope that resonates with the fans once again, as we turn our attentions now more
fully to the final chapters in the story. Not only that, but we've got some
fantastic inserts lined up that are sure to excite fans and collectors
alike."
Both the Hobby and Retail versions of the products will have rare
Evolution A and even rarer Evolution B inserts, which feature some of the
characters in alternate costumes and looks.
Hobby Exclusives
include:
* Authentic Autographs: "We hope to add to the list, but
so far, we've got James Earl Jones again, the singular voice of Darth Vader,"
Saunders says. "And for the first time ever, Hayden Christensen is signing!
We've been trying to get Hayden for several years now, and it just seems
appropriate that he be featured in a set called Evolution, as Anakin undergoes
the most radical transformation of all in the saga."
* 1/1 Cut
Signatures: Signature cards include the highly-sought subjects of George
Lucas, Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing. "The 1/1 cut signatures are going to
make some very lucky collectors very, very happy," Saunders says. "Since actors
Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing have both passed on, and George Lucas never
signs, these are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to have the one-and-only
signed cards from them ever. Can you imagine the excitement of opening packs and
pulling one of these out? For the fan and collector in me, I can't image
anything better."
* All-New Etched-Foil Puzzle: As with the Galaxy,
Heritage and Revenge of the Sith sets, the Etched-Foil cards return. These cards
feature art by Jan Duursema and Dan Parsons, who fans know for their work on
Star Wars: Republic, and more currently with the Star Wars: Legacy series from
Dark Horse Comics. "Fans of great artwork will love Jan and Dan's great work on
the Etched-Foil Puzzle, which continues the image collages begun in and carried
through the Galaxy, Heritage and first Sith sets," Saunders says. "In
particular, it features the dynamic Anakin vs. Obi-Wan duel across two of the
six cards!"
* Super-Rare Sequentially Numbered Luke and Leia
Cards: "This will be a Super-Rare Evolution C, featuring yet another series
of looks for these characters," Saunders says. "They will be sequentially
numbered so only a small handful of these will exist."
Retail
Exclusives include:
* Stained Glass Cards: Printed on clear,
textured plastic, these character-based cards give the effect of stained glass.
"These cards will feature designs incorporated into the stained glass patterns
that will speak to the wonderful graphics we've come to expect from the Star
Wars universe," Saunders says. "It's a fun technology and allows us to feature
the characters in a new and exciting way."
The set is scheduled to ship
in July.

Beloved Character
to Return for Star Wars TV |
Star Wars Series producer Rick
McCullum spoke at the Empire Film Awards in London. The TV series will focus on
the rise of Darth Vader's dark empire and will feature original actor Anthony
Daniels, who played dithering droid C-3P0. None of the other cast, including
Ewan McGregor in the prequels and Carrie Fisher in the first three movies, will
be involved. Rick explained: "It'll all be new because the originals will all be
too old. But we will be using Anthony as C-3P0 because there is such a thing as
loyalty." Be sure to visit Mirror.co.uk to read the full article!
It will be great to see C-3PO and R2-D2 continuing to provide the thread that
binds the Star Wars Saga together. Rick has also stated that we will follow
other characters who did not play a major role in the films. There are a few
characters who come to mind that could help tie Episode III to Episode IV and be
reprised by the original actors. They would be Captain Antillies, Jimmy Smits as
Bail Organa, and the return of Mon Mothma who was very convincing in the scenes
that were cut from Episode III. All of these were minor characters and they
would help us to continue to see the rise of the Rebellion. It might be a while
before we know for sure, but we will just have to wait and see. |
