Star Wars Rebels: The Empire Returns

In this special video that debuted at New York Comic Con 2013, Dave Filoni, executive producer of Star Wars Rebels, takes fans behind-the-scenes of the upcoming animated series and discusses the prominent role the Empire will play in the show. Filoni introduces some of the creative team involved in Star Wars Rebels, including executive producers Simon Kinberg and Greg Weisman, Kiri Hart (head of development), Pablo Hidalgo (from Lucasfilm's Story Group), and more, including many Star Wars: The Clone Wars veterans like Kilian Plunkett, Joel Aron, and Steward Lee.

Filoni says the crew is very excited to finally get to tell stories with the Empire as the main villain, noting the show will feature TIE fighters, Stormtroopers, and classic Star Wars bad guys. And the series will feature a new marquee villain, revealed here first: the Inquisitor, a mysterious figure who is "tasked by Darth Vader to hunt down the remaining Jedi Knights."

Star Wars Rebels is set to debut on Disney XD in 2014. Stay tuned to StarWars.com for more on this highly anticipated animated series.

Star Wars Rebels Panel Recap

Here are some key points from the Star Wars Rebel hosted by Pablo Hidalgo on Saturday at New York Comic Con.

- Art will be a "few degrees off" from Episode IV
- Star Wars Rebels will debut in "about a year" as an hour-long special on Disney Channel, then as a half hour show on Disney XD.
- Dave Filoni stated in his opening video "Keep your eyes open, you might get a glimpse of something sinister coming your way."
- We're not going to look at Ghost or the Rebels during the panel, it's about the might of the Empire.
- The original planet we saw in earlier Rebels material from Celebration Europe was the planet Lothal. A frontier planet in the Outer Rim.
- Series takes place 14 years after Revenge of the Sith.
- "One of the principals of the Empire is expansion, and they did that by pushing out into the Outer Rim territories"
- Pablo Hidalgo settles the difference between clone troopers and Stormtroopers per George: Stormtroopers are citizens who volunteer.
- Jango Fett Clone Troopers would be around 54 years old due to accelerated aging at the time of Rebels
- Some aged Clone Troopers are used as training sergeants for the new ranks of Stormtroopers while others become disgruntled as per Lucas' notes
- Rebels Stormtrooper weapons will have an extra bump on them as a tribute to the Kenner action figures
- Pablo stated that the Empire “doesn’t have the resources to invade every planet they want to annex."
- "The Empire doesn't have the best interests of Lothal in mind." Rebellion ensues.
- TIE Fighters in the series are 'based off McQuarrie's original design'
- Rebels is a return to the time when the Rebels were the underdogs. They have hope and conviction.
- The new villain is an Imperial Inquisitor. Brought in to hunt down Jedi.
- The inquisitor will carry a double-bladed lightsaber and there will be a Jedi presence in the show.
- Never heard of an Imperial Inquisitor? The Inquisitorius was a secret division of Imperial Intelligence consisting of dark siders first mentioned in The Star Wars Sourcebook.
- 'The pilot of the ghost has called the ship the ghost for a very good reason.' Does it have a cloking device perhaps?
- Pablo states that Rebels is being developed much faster than The Clone Wars in part because they learned from Clone Wars.
- Pablo couldn't answer a question about The Inquisitor and his possible relationship to Starkiller.
- Rebels will go in chronological order and follow the same group of basic characters.
- There is a big focus on the Imperials in the show, and they'll be as developed alongside the heroes
- Some new aliens on Rebels are inspired by unused McQuarrie artwork.
- People will die in this series. Episode 4 of Rebels will see a real tone shift in series.
- Since Episode IV is 5 years from Rebels, there won't be specifics but that information will be referenced.
- There is a presence of the Jedi in the show but they are very cognizant of Order 66.
- "Our heroes will find out that when they are more successful, they'll have to fight bigger bosses."
- In response to if there will be bounty hunters, "It's not just black and white Rebels versus Empire"
- "Our heroes are very much the underdogs," a major change from The Clone Wars, where the heroes were the establishment.

The Clone Wars Bonus Content Coming Early 2014

Dave Filoni posted the following statement on his on Facebook page:

"Star Wars fans – I have some exciting news! We have wrapped production on all of the remaining Star Wars: The Clone Wars episodes, and while that might be sad news in one way, it’s good news in another. It means you will finally get to see them. When, exactly, is a detail I cannot yet share. I can confirm that in early 2014 you will be watching the final episodes of The Clone Wars, including one of Master Yoda’s most challenging missions. So, get ready. We’ve got Clone Wars and Rebels coming at you in 2014. Animated Star Wars is alive and well. Trust in the Force my friends."
- Dave

Great news! I hope we get that on Blu-ray at the same time it is released.
