Eisley--Anything
But Scum And Villainy |
According To The Official Star Wars
Site
When a band names itself after an infamous Tatooine spaceport,
it's fairly easy to predict that its members might be avid Star Wars
fans. The Texas-based indie band took the name Eisley (dropping the "Mos" to
avoid any awkward legal issues) in reference to their music's celestial sound,
and of course to pay homage to a space fantasy saga that seemed to be an
ever-present fixture during their childhood.
"We were never a big
Halloween costume-type family, but we've had lightsabers around the house ever
since I can remember," Sherri DuPree, Eisley singer and guitarist,
says.
Along with her two sisters -- singer/guitarist Chauntelle and
singer/keyboardist Stacy -- her brother and drummer Weston and their best friend
bassist Jon Wilson, it's clear that the band has more than one Star Wars fan
thanks to her father, Boyd.

"Charlotte" and
ROTS on DVD |
According to The Official Star Wars
Site
Some attentive fans who boot up the new Revenge of the Sith DVD
on their computer might find a strange name attached to the DVD icon appearing
on their desktop: CHARLOTTE. At first glance, one might think they've
accidentally intercepted a disc outlining some clandestine plot hidden within
the coding of a mass-market DVD. Or, perhaps Charlotte could be the name of some
shady agent of intrigue?
In fact, both guesses would be correct -- from a
certain point of view.
It's the result of a method used by the industry
to safeguard some of its high-profile projects from publicity leaks -- a class
of projects that includes Revenge of the Sith. "Charlotte" was the codename
assigned to the Episode III DVD project.

Behind Hip Hop
Yoda: Making a DVD Easter Egg |
According To The Official Star Wars
Site
But as a fun aside, Michel d'Annoville also decided to create
the Hip Hop Yoda Easter Egg secretly located on the Revenge of the Sith DVD.
Ironically, the rapping Yoda sequence was never initially intended to be hidden
on the DVD.
"It was a side project I worked on over the course of a few
months on weekends during Episode III production as a surprise for the Animation
Director, Rob Coleman," Michel d'Annoville reveals.
While taking a dance
class for Industrial Light & Magic employees, Michel d'Annoville imagined
seeing Coleman's little green friend bust a move and figured it would be a fun
way to say thank you for all his work as the animation team's
director.
"I was lucky enough to attend a hip hop class offered through
ILM and taught by Jackie Burns," Michel d'Annoville recalls. "She was nice
enough to allow me to film the class in order to study the movement. One of
Jackie's routines was to 'Don't Say Nuthin' by The Roots. Not only did I like
the song itself but the choreography included breakdancing which I thought would
be fun to animate. I mentioned to Jackie my idea of Yoda hip hop dancing. She
thought it was a really cool idea and that's how the project began."
Once
the project was underway, Michel d'Annoville and her team began their work
creating the animation, adding and fine-tuning key elements.

Homing Beacon
#149 |
The latest Homing Beacon has
arrived and today we get to talk about a new CG Yoda for Episode I. Now that
Episode III is available on DVD, viewers can carefully examine the painstaking
work of Animation Director Rob Coleman and his team that brought the many
digital characters to life, including Jedi Master Yoda.
To get his animation team back in prime shape for their work ahead on Episode
III, Coleman says that they replaced the footage of the Episode I Yoda puppet
with their Episode III digital model as a test to see how far they could push
his usual performance boundaries. This footage worked its way into the DVD,
where it can be see as part of "The Chosen One" featurette on Disc 2.
"We did that between Episodes II and III as an exercise to get the team back
into the character," Coleman explains. "On Episode II, I was stressing about
living up to what Frank [Oz] had created. A lot of our focus was on the final
battle sequence between Yoda and Count Dooku. We had never seen Yoda do that
before. In the process, we were learning about acting as animators. It was
really exciting for me to have the team back again between Episode II and III.
We used Episode I as a testbed because we didn't know what was going to be in
Episode III, so we got the team back up to speed. We really honed our acting
skills and, using that as a springboard, we moved right on to Episode III."
While the use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) has evolved with each
prequel, some have expressed concerns that the digital arts may overshadow the
performance that legendary puppeteer and actor Frank Oz put into everyone's
beloved little green friend. But Coleman says that the worry is unwarranted
considering the research that went into making the CGI Yoda into a real,
believable character based on Oz's work.
"The real example is that when we first did a test [for Episode II], it
looked like a creepy little green man," Coleman says. "It didn't look like Yoda.
We could do all kinds of extra things with the face that a puppet couldn't do.
In learning about the character and trying to get to the essence as well as its
spirit, I went back and studied what Frank Oz had done frame-by-frame. It became
part of the character. We literally got down to the amount of wiggle through the
ears. Whether it was because Frank was holding a 60-pound puppet above his head
all day long and his hand started to shake, or if it was something that he was
putting in consciously, it was simply part of the character."
"When we started to do the computer animation, we had to add in what I call
performance 'dirt' -- shake, wiggle, and little jars in the performance that
Frank did naturally as an extremely talented puppeteer," Coleman explains. "My
group had to learn all of that. When we first showed it to Frank, we were
showing him a pretty creepy-looking green man. It didn't look like this beloved
character that we had come to love."
While just making the leap to a digital Yoda and his unprecedented acrobatics
formed the obstacles in Episode II, Episode III was more of a refinement of the
digital character, and the challenges came from more subtle performance and
acting.
"I was really terrified before Episode II came out about the fight," Coleman
confesses. "Once we got through that, I felt that we could really up the ante in
terms of the performance and the interaction between Yoda and the live actors he
was sharing the screen with. It put more pressure on the crew and me to really
challenge ourselves. In the process, we were rewarded with some very nice
close-ups. There's a really nice scene between Anakin and Yoda in Yoda's
sanctuary, which I don't think would have been in Episode II had it been written
at that time. I don't think George Lucas would have been comfortable enough to
give us sustained close-ups and to give us a thinking time, which is really the
acting time."
Continues Coleman, "Any time you look at real people onscreen, we learn more
about them as a character when they are not talking compared to when they are --
the reactions, the facial expressions, the thinking, or the doubting. They are
not listening to the person -- they are worried about something else. It's a joy
as an animator to be given those shots with a character like
Yoda." |

February 2006
Comics |
The Official Star Wars Site has provided a look at what Dark Horse
Comics has in store for Star Wars fans in February. The 25-cent Star Wars:
Knights of the Old Republic / Rebellion flip book features two brand new stories
(one on each side) and never-before-seen concept designs for both Rebellion and
Knights of the Old Republic.
The Knights side presents a world four
thousand years in the distant Star Wars past, where the Jedi Order flourishes,
the Sith are at their most deadly, and the legendary Mandalorian army are on the
verge of a devastating march across the galaxy. It's here that Zayne, a young
Jedi with a grand destiny, takes his first steps into a larger and more
dangerous world.
Set prior to the event of The Empire Strikes Back, the
Rebellion half gives a glimpse into the lives of Luke Skywalker, Rebel Jorin
Sol, and Imperial Officer Janek Sunber, just before the events of the new
series.
This preview issue features the talents of John Jackson Miller,
Thomas Andrews, Brian Ching, Michael Atiyeh and Brandon Badeux. It is scheduled
for release on February 1.
Later that month, you can continue the Knights
of the Old Republic adventure with the second issue of the series. Life in the
Jedi Order isn't supposed to be easy -- it's a culture of strict discipline,
hard work, and self-control. Only the galaxy's brightest and most gifted
graduate to the Order's upper echelon of Knights and Masters. This is a dilemma
Padawan Zayne Carrick has faced most of his life, knowing that he might not
possess the smarts or abilities needed to rise above his station -- it's a
problem further compounded now that he's accused of murder and on the run, with
his former friends and allies out to get him, and the alien con man he's chained
to is doing everything he can to shake the young Jedi! But there are greater
forces at work and Zayne's about to learn that the will of the Force moves in
mysterious ways.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #2 is by John
Jackson Miller, Brian Ching, Michael Atiyeh, and Travis Charest. It is scheduled
for release on February 22.
The Clone Wars come to their shocking
conclusion in the eighth volume of trade paperback reprints, Star Wars: Clone
Wars Volume 8 -- The Last Siege, The Final Truth. This collection gathers Star
Wars: Republic #72-77, which chronicles the ongoing siege of Saleucami, and the
Separatist plot to hatch their own clone army of Morgukai warriors. Quinlan Vos
and Aayla Secura star in this action-packed epic. The 144-page trade paperback
features the work of John Ostrander, Jan Duursema, Dan Parsons, Brad Anderson
and Tomás Giorello, and is scheduled for release on March 22. |

Episode III DVD
and Battlefront II Shatter Records |
The Official Star Wars Site has
announced that in just one week of release, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of
the Sith on DVD and the Star Wars Battlefront II video game brought in sales of
US $210 million in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia
and Latin America, capping a record-breaking year for Star Wars.
The two
newest Star Wars home-entertainment releases debut in four more major
international markets through Nov. 23.
Jim Ward, Senior Vice President of
Lucasfilm Ltd. and President of LucasArts, said, "The phenomenal sales
underscore the enduring strength of the series. In many territories, DVD and
game sales were nearly double what we initially expected. Consumers are clearly
eager to experience the movie again in pristine DVD quality and to immerse
themselves in the Star Wars universe by playing Star Wars Battlefront
II."
Star Wars Battlefront II is poised to overtake last year's original
Star Wars Battlefront as the best-selling Star Wars video game of all time, with
first-week sales 40 percent ahead of its predecessor, Ward said.
The
record-breaking sales of the DVD and video game continue a trend that began on
May 19, when Star Wars: Episode III opened in movie theaters in the U.S. to
widespread critical acclaim and smashed the one-day box-office total with $50.6
million in sales. Throughout the summer, Revenge of the Sith set new box-office
standards, taking in $380 million in the U.S. and $468 million internationally,
becoming the worldwide No. 1 movie of the year.
But the popularity of
Star Wars goes well beyond cinema and home entertainment. The NPD Group recently
reported that Star Wars is the most popular toy property by far, with 9.1% of
the entire U.S. toy market heading into the key holiday period, outselling its
nearest rival by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.
Star Wars was the most popular
Halloween costume line in 2005, and four specially created museum exhibits
celebrating Star Wars are running simultaneously around the world. On Thursday,
Nov. 10, even Donald Trump will enter the Star Wars universe as NBC airs a
special Star Wars-themed version of The Apprentice. |

Updated |
Many of you over the last month or
so have e-mailed in saying that the music embedded in the header was becoming
annoying. It was a cool thing at first, especially right before and after the
movie came out, but its time is out lived. I also had a problem with keeping the
music off when the on/off button was used. Your concerns have been heard and
also addressed. You now have a music free header that still has the lightsaber
and Vader breathing sounds, but the on/off button will actually work for you. I
hope this will make your stay a little more enjoyable now so you can watch and
listen to all of the multimedia we provide in peace and uninterrupted. The
header will stay this way until the next version of the site is released which I
do not have a date for at this time. Thanks for your feedback and take
