Kotobukiya 3-D McQuarrie Duel

The Official Star Wars Site has announced that one of the most evocative of Ralph McQuarrie's early concept illustrations for Star Wars will soon be available as a 3-D vinyl model courtesy of the masterful artisans at Kotobukiya. You can find the artwork it was created for in The Art of Ralph McQuarrie section here at Galactic Voyage.

The figure designs inspired by McQuarrie's 1975 depiction of a duel between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker (or rather, "Deak Starkiller") include a more lupine face mask for Vader and a "breath mask" for Luke. According to McQuarrie, early versions of the script implied that the Rebel starship's hull was breached by the Imperials to board it, releasing the pressurized atmosphere into space. As a result, both Luke and Vader were required to wear breath masks for a duel sequence that was later revised (or rather delayed until Empire). While Luke no longer required the mask after script rewrites, Vader kept his since the look so perfectly captured his sinister mystique. Be sure to read the entire article which includes more pictures!

Star Wars Insider and Hyperspace Split

Thirty years after the release of Star Wars, Titan Magazines -- the world's leading publisher of officially licensed film and television magazines -- is proud to announce that it will take over publication of Star Wars Insider, the magazine that has long been the official source of Star Wars news and features for Star Wars fans all over the world.

Titan will utilize its wealth of experience and understanding of both the science-fiction/fantasy and entertainment markets to raise Star Wars Insider to a new level of excellence.

When Celebration IV, the biggest gathering of Star Wars fans in the galaxy, commemorates the 30th Anniversary of the saga in Los Angeles in May, Star Wars Insider will relaunch to mark this incredible event. It's another in an unprecedented series of events throughout 2007 that marks this milestone anniversary.

Okay... Now that the publicity hype for Titan is over and being a member of Hyperspace myself, I had some serious questions. Some of them have been answered here.

Here are some highlights:

  • The separation becomes effective April 1, 2007
  • There will be a seamless transition in delivery of issue #92 and #93
  • When you current subscription ends, you will need to go to StarWarsShop.com to renew
  • The Insider will cost $29.95 for six issues
  • Hyperspace will cost $14.95

Yet again, the Insider is going to be handled by someone else and we the fans get caught in the middle. The ease of one subscription becomes two and I am waiting for the nightmare that is surely to come with the subscription renewals. I will try to remain positive on this transition and hope for the best.
