4-LOM was a late-model protocol droid serving as valet and computer-cyborg specialist onboard the passenger line Kuari Princess.  As entertainment, the droid began engaging the ship's computer in a series of games, simulating how best to steal valuables.  The games became serious when the droid and computer began altering each other's programming.  4-LOM reasoned that valuable items should not be left in the hands of some of the ship's careless passengers, so he began stealing them.  4-LOM altered programming gave him more sentience and he began selling information to powerful crime lords like Jabba the Hutt.  Jabba realized that the droid would make an excellent bounty hunter, so he offered to have 4-LOM reprogrammed in exchange for his services.  4-LOM agreed and Jabba paired him with the Gand bounty hunter, Zuckuss.  Zuckuss had a strange intuition (possibly Force talent) that often helped him outguess his opponents.  4-LOM desperately wants to learn how to receive intuition himself, so he studies everything Zuckuss does.  Jabba sent the two of them to find Han Solo, but unfortunately for them, he was captured and taken in by Boba Fett.

Not wanting the mission to be a total loss, the two bounty hunters rescued several rebels from one of their transports.  At first they intended to sell them to the Empire, but they ended up taking them to a rebel base.  Zuckuss was very ill and needed an expensive operation due to a previous accident.  The Rebels offered to perform the operation since Zuckuss and 4-LOM had helped them.  Because of the Rebels kindness, Zuckuss and 4-LOM defected.

4-LOM often practices meditation, hoping to get intuitive knowledge.  In one vision he saw himself sitting with young Jedi Knights in a newly established Jedi Academy, so who knows what he'll do in the future.
