We
are on the cusp of the Thanksgiving holiday here in the United
States
and in doing so, it brings us to today which is the 39th
Anniversary of
The Star Wars Holiday Special. The special was broadcast in its
entirety
on Friday, November 17, 1978 and aired on the CBS television
network from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time (EST),
pre-empting Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk.
It was the only time it was ever shown.
It features Chewie and Han trying to get back to Kashyyyk for a
celebration called Life Day. Many of the main characters from the
original Star Wars were in it, but one of the most significant events
was the introduction of Boba Fett in a cartoon that Chewie's son is
watching.
I am one of the very few people to have actually seen the special
when it originally aired on TV. You have to remember it was 1978 and
times were really different then. You have to imagine a world without
mobile devices, home computers, the Internet, or even home movies. I was
9 at that time The Star Wars Holiday Special was broadcast and for all
we knew Star Wars was a one time fantastic movie experience but it
wasn't in theaters anymore and you couldn't watch it at home. I was so thoroughly
excited that there was going to be more to Star Wars! As a kid, I was
just in awe to see my favorite characters again, but in something new.
Today, many people truly dislike the Holiday Special. However, they
discovered it many, many years after it was released. Seeing the Special
now as an adult, it is bad. I mean really bad, but it is a right of
passage for every Star Wars fan! Seeing it now reminds me of when Star
Wars was new and of the kid I used to be with the wonder of Star Wars.
Just think, in the next month we will be watching Episode VIII in the
series with so much Star Wars behind us with movies, TV shows, books,
and games, but we are in the Golden Age of Star Wars with the
announcements of so much more to come!
The Star Wars Holiday Special runs for about 1 hour and 35 minutes. May
the Force be with you this Holiday Season. Enjoy!
On this episode of Science and Star Wars, we explore real-world
technologies for traveling the galaxy with astronaut Cady Coleman and
take a tour of the International Space Station.
Enjoy!
