Homing Beacon
#175 |
The latest Homing Beacon has
arrived and today we get to talk about the Official Star Wars Site! Ten years ago this month, a new
destination appeared on the primitive browsers of the first online Star
Wars fans. Though the World Wide Web was still a new untamed and untested
destination, many fans felt it was overdue. The year before, in 1995, 20th
Century Fox Home Entertainment's site offered up an official Star Wars
presence with a page dedicated to the final VHS release of the original,
unaltered trilogy. A year later, in '96, curious collectors followed the release
of the Shadows of the Empire multimedia project by scouring lucasarts.com
as well as a host of licensee sites. On November 26, 1996, the URL
www.starwars.com would finally resolve into the very first incarnation of the
Official Star Wars site.
"We're starting off small," said a paragraph of modest introductory text,
"Just as Star Wars grew, or rather exploded, in the public consciousness,
this web site will continue to grow and change. And like the films, our aim is
to inform, entertain, surprise and amuse you."
Originally dedicated to the release of the Special Edition Trilogy,
starwars.com was at first a slim collection of pages, with each section themed
to one of the classic planets. On Dagobah was a Jedi Training Center aimed at
kids, with an online coloring book. On Tatooine was the site map, handy for the
many visiting web novices. Bespin allowed for email registration, while Hoth
simply housed links pointing to other corporate sites: Skywalker Sound, THX and
LucasArts. The Death Star was the prime destination. After answering a trivia
question, visitors were taken to a growing repository of information on the
forthcoming Special Edition release.
In 10 years, the site has ballooned to over 10,000 pages of content,
chronicling the production of the prequels in new and unique ways, expanding to
cover the activities of publishers and licensees, and building up a huge
community of fans through message boards, blogs and more. And there's much more
planned for 2007...
Starting in December, look to the site for a series of retrospective articles
with insights, interviews and trivia meant to celebrate the first decade of
starwars.com. |

Featured Artist
Craig Burt-Painting by Numbers 14 |
Featured Artist Craig Burt has provided us
with a breakdown of one of his paintings that provides us with a look into how
the picture came about. Here is some of the article created by Craig:
"Anakin
Amour"
This one 'Anakin Amour' was painted a couple of years before
the release of ROTS, so it's pretty speculative without any real picture info to
go on.
1. Was the start of the idea for the picture. This photo I thought
gave a good opportunity to portray the vulnerability and pressure of Padmé
bearing the child of Mr. Evil's little project.
2. Is a photo from AOTC.
I immediately saw Obi-Wan holding Anakin's lightsaber with this pic.
Be sure to read the rest of the article about "Anakin
Amour" in the Painting by
Numbers section. Thanks Craig for another great walkthrough of how this
image came about! Enjoy! |

Rare Zuckuss
Signing at Wattographs |
Wattographs is offering a rare Zuckuss signing. This is from
Gary X in their newsletter:
Amazingly, the guys who run the UK convention called "Empire Day" have
managed to find the woman who’d played the role of the bounty hunter Zuckuss,
Cathy Munroe. She had actually been pretty much assumed dead for some time now,
but those rumors are false! She'll be signing in the UK at Empire Day, but
unfortunately most of us don’t live there and won't be able to get that
in-person signature.
However, Wattographs will be making her EXTREMELY RARE autograph
available. This is the first time she's signed to anyone's knowledge. But, you
gotta do it ASAP as that con is is on December 3 and the window of opportunity
for us to order closes in a week. This is an amazing opportunity to complete any
collection of bounty hunter autographs. Due to the abbreviated schedule for
ordering, we unfortunately cannot take personal items this time. The URL is at
http://wattographs.com/privatesignings/cathymonroe.html. This
signing must absolutely end on November 27th, so please do not delay.
If you are into collecting signatures of Star Wars actors and actresses, then
this one is for you! |
