Homing Beacon #174

The latest Homing Beacon has arrived and today we get to talk about what Jeremy Bulloch is doing these days. With his memorable portrayal as the original trilogy Boba Fett, actor Jeremy Bulloch is an acknowledge legend of sci-fi and fantasy films. Thanks to his VIP blog on blogs.starwars.com, he's able to let his fans know all about his latest inter-galactic endeavor as Dr. Striker on the upcoming British sci-fi sitcom "Starhyke."

Along a similar vein of other sci-fi comedies such as "Red Dwarf" and "A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," "Starhyke" spins a tale about an oddball starship crew from the year 3034. In order to thwart the alien Reptid army from unleashing a biological weapon that will change the history of Earth, Captain Blowhard and her team on board the Dreadnought Nemesis travel back in time to Earth in 2006. However, in 3034 all forms of emotion have been repressed -- making most humans cold and non-responsive. After an unexpected explosion on the ship, the crew's dormant emotions take over making their task even more difficult, and in many cases --hilarious.

On the show, Bulloch plays the crew's doctor whose bedside manner is drastically affected by his newly-resurfaced emotions. "Dr. Striker was fun to play as he is a well-respected man of medicine but he is past his sell by date and really shouldn't be treating patients," Bulloch explains. "He always has a pretty nurse with him and is on the slide into insanity."

"I was first asked to be involved two years ago by creator Andrew Dymond," Bulloch continues. "I had worked on a project with him some time ago and he just telephoned me to see if I was interested. How could I turn it down playing the part of a mad doctor?"

Other actors in the cast include Claudia Christian ("Babylon 5"), Suanne Braun ("Stargate SG-1"), Rachel Grant (Die Another Day), Brad Gorton ("Footballers' Wives"), Danny John-Jules (Blade II) and Mike Edmonds (Return of the Jedi).

"It is completely off the wall," Bulloch says. "I am sure that Star Wars fans would love to get to know the characters."

When fans come to Bulloch's VIP blog, he plans to keep them updated on further developments around the new series as well as where people can meet him at various conventions. So far, it seems Bulloch is already enjoying his new role as a VIP blogger. "Blogging is fun!" Bulloch says. "It is new and you get instant replies. When I have time, I will blog to keep everyone up to speed with news and updated info."

Read more about Bulloch and his latest projects in his VIP Starwars.com Blog.

Featured Artist Holly Freeman-Holly's Sketches Poster 3

Featured Artist Holly Freeman has provided a breakdown of how Poster 3 was created by providing early sketches and things that influenced her work. She has also provided commentary on the sketches. Here is some of the article created by Holly:

SABRINAwIKCIN.jpg (76319 bytes)
Poster 3

I always thought it would look best to have Ikcin in the center of the drawing, since she was integral to the plot. At this point, Velexa had wanted to seek out someone she had felt a keen sense of familiarity: that somehow she knew they had a lot in common -- so we sought out Crovax on Tatooine. At the time he was errand-boy for Jabba, and we gleaned some valuable information from Jabba about Sibarra the Hutt. Sibarra had recently acquired a Formassan, and the description he gave left no doubt that it was our Ikcin. So we left from there with Crovax "Bruiser" Brummaxium in tow, and headed to Nar Shada where Sibarra and his kind festered.

Be sure to read the rest of the article about Poster 3 in the Holly's Sketches section. Thanks Holly for a great walkthrough of how this poster came to be! Enjoy!

Featured Artist Craig Burt-Painting by Numbers 13

Featured Artist Craig Burt has throws us a little twist in this weeks Painting by Numbers as he has provided a breakdown of his latest painting, but we have not received the final image yet! Craig provides us with a look into how the picture came about. Here is some of the article created by Craig:

Sw 4 BBY progressive.jpg (941576 bytes)
"SW 4 BBY"

This painting is a bit different in style than normal. I've decided that my usual style doesn't really suit the Star Wars elements and I've tried to develop a refinement of it. That basically involves a more detailed and permanent drawing of the painting under the paint to start, and, more 'proper' detail in the background.

What I really like about Craig's last couple of paintings is the reality of the moment in time he is capturing. The way he is creating these images as if they were pictures taken by someone, really grabs me. I really enjoy this style because you can really "feel" the moment. Be sure to read the rest of the article about "SW 4 BBY" in the Painting by Numbers section. Thanks Craig for another great walkthrough of how this image came about!

Also, be sure to stay tuned, same bat-time, same bat-channel, next week for a view of the whole painting!

February 2007 Comics

Star Wars Dark Times-The Path to Nowhere 5.jpg (39043 bytes)The Official Star Wars Site has provided a look at more Dark Horse Comics for Star Wars fans this February. In the distant Star Wars future, political relationships are still often delicate constructs -- even more so when the "marriage" is between two longtime enemies. When rightful Emperor Roan Fel reaches out to the remnants of the Galactic Alliance, the stage is set for serious distrust, if not outright betrayal. And to complicate matters, the Sith have dispatched one of their best agents to ensure the failure of the proposed alliance.

But Moff Nyna Calixte's agenda differs from that of her Sith masters, and she puts her own player into the mix -- reactivating an agent who has been dormant for nearly two decades. Meanwhile, the question on everybody's mind: Where has Cade Skywalker gone?

Find out more in Star Wars: Legacy #9, part one of the two-part Trust Issues story cycle, by John Ostrander, Colin Wilson, Brad Anderson and David Ross. It is scheduled for a February 14 release.

In the turbulent times after Episode III, a quest comes to an end, but it's not the end of the road. Paths diverge, alliances are split, and doing the right thing has become a betrayal. The chaos of the Clone Wars and the darkness of Palpatine's Empire have allowed a smaller, more personal -- but no less deadly -- evil to flourish, and confronting it changes everything. After all he's done, can Dass Jennir still call himself a Jedi? After all that has happened, can Bomo Greenbark find the strength to go on?

The first story arc set in this new, uncharted era of Star Wars history reaches an unexpected conclusion in what Dark Horse Comics is calling "quite possibly the darkest Star Wars story you'll ever read!" Star Wars: Dark Times -- The Path to Nowhere #5 is by Welles Hartley, Mick Harrison, Douglas Wheatley and Ronda Pattison. It is scheduled for release on February 28.

In the ancient past, unexpected twists lurk at every turn as power-mad evildoers hunt our heroes amidst a galaxy spanning war set nearly 4,000 years before Luke Skywalker! A deadly new threat targets Camper, the seriously senile captain of the renegade vessel The Last Resort, and his youthful guardian Jarael must risk everything to try and save him, even if it's impossible. Meanwhile, fugitive Padawan Zayne Carrick and the conniving Gryph have mistakenly tricked their way into their most dangerous predicament yet -- surrounded by an army they are trying to escape on a planet that's about to become the biggest battlefront in the galaxy. The second someone recognizes them, they're toast, assuming that a stray blaster bolt doesn't get them first!

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic #14 is by John Jackson Miller, Dustin Weaver, Michael Atiyeh and Brian Ching. It is scheduled for release on February 28.

Looking beyond February to spring of 2007, when the entire galaxy will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Star Wars, Dark Horse has a few special releases planned. Each month, the Star Wars 30th Anniversary Collection series will bring readers a limited-edition hardcover of the best of Dark Horse's Star Wars graphic novels. Available only through Direct Market retail outlets, each volume's print run is limited to initial orders and will not be reprinted.

Volume 2 gathers the epic Jedi Vs. Sith, by Darko Macan, Ramon F. Bachs, Raul Fernandez, Chris Blythe and Andrew Robinson. A thousand years before Luke Skywalker embarked on his fateful confrontation with the Death Star, the Jedi Army of Light met the Sith Army on the planet Ruusan for a climactic showdown that would forever change the galaxy. Read about the rise of Darth Bane, and witness the terrible war on Ruusan from the eyes of orphans caught between enemy lines. The perfect follow-up to those who were just introduced to the era with the recently released Darth Bane: Path of Destruction novel.

Also out in April is a gathering of the first story-arc of Star Wars: Legacy. "Broken" collects issues #1-3 and 5-7 of the ongoing Legacy series by John Ostrander, Jan Duursema, Dan Parsons, Brad Anderson and Adam Hughes. It's the future of Star Wars: all-new adventures set more than a century after Return of the Jedi and the New Jedi Order!
