Homing Beacon
#168 |
The latest Homing Beacon has
arrived and today we get to talk about Princess Leia. It was Princess Leia's
Organa's most memorable wardrobe choice -- albeit chosen by Jabba the Hutt --
the brief brass bikini worn while chained to the bloated gangster in Return
of the Jedi. Developed in sketches by Nilo Rodis-Jamero, it was actually the
ILM Model Shop that was tasked to construct the real costume worn by actress
Carrie Fisher.
"Nilo was doing sketches, and I had seen what he was planning," recalls Lorne
Peterson, veteran ILM modelmaker who has worked on all six Star Wars
films. "Incidentally, at the same time, someone I went to college with happened
to sit beside me at a café who I hadn't seen in something like 18 years. In
striking up an old friendship, I realized that he was a sculptor, and many of
his own private sculptures were very much like Princess Leia's outfit."
That sculptor, Richard Miller, joined ILM for Jedi, and stayed on to
work on many other films, including the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
"An interesting aside is that one of the moldmakers, when he realized he was
going to get to do the body-casting of Carrie Fisher... he talked about it every
day," recalls Peterson. "And somewhere in Production, at the last minute, they
changed and had another moldmaker do it, much to his chagrin. If he had just
kept his mouth shut and not been so enthusiastic, they would have let him go
through with it!" |

Damaged Topps
Autograph Cards |
Some of you may have encountered a
damaged Star Wars Evolution Update autograph card and Topps has announced what
they plan on doing about it. Here is what they said:
Dear Star Wars Fan,
It has recently come to our attention that a small percentage of Star Wars
Evolution Update autograph cards were damaged while being inserted into packs.
While we have rigid quality control procedures in place, this was an unforeseen
problem and we are working closely with our vendors to make sure that it does
not occur again. All the more regrettable is the fact that we do not have
surplus inventory of each autograph to replace all of the affected cards and
arranging to have talent sign more cards is not an option. Consequently, going
forward, we cannot honor replacement requests.
For anyone who has received a less-than-perfect card, we offer our sincere
apologies… and something more.
We’d like to offer you a very special collectible: a Luke Skywalker
Evolution “D” card. This card was not previously available and is being created
exclusively for this redemption. All you have to do is fill out the form and
mail it to the address shown at the top. You don’t have to send your imperfect
cards back. No receipt or SASE is necessary. Just send the completed form and
we’ll handle the rest.
As always, we thank you for your support.
May The Force Be With You!
The Topps Company, Inc.
If you have a damaged card and would like a redemption, you can fill out this form and send it in. |

Craig Burt's Past
Pair |
Craig Burt has provided a new
outstanding painting to the Featured Artist
section! It features an Episode IV scene showing Biggs and Luke on Tatooine.
Thanks Craig! Here are Craig's thoughts for this piece:
This one is a bit of an experiment in acrylic. Still haven't found a
technique that works for me with this type of paint.
The cut scenes with
Biggs and Luke from Episode IV have always fascinated me. Probably because there
were photos of the scenes in the Star Wars storybook - 1977/78 - but there were
no such scenes in the movie. With my Star Wars induced madness of the time and
hunger for everything related to the movie, I always wanted to know more about
this Biggs character and those scenes. That's where the idea for this painting
comes from.
I've tried to paint a sort-of holiday snap type of picture.
Like something you might find flipping through peoples photo albums - a
snap-shot of point in time from days past.
It could be that Biggs is on
a visit home to see his family and childhood friend Luke, or maybe it's the day
Biggs leaves for his first day at the academy - in all the splendor of his
uniform - (any uniform with a cape has to be a good one). Luke decides he wants
a photo to mark the occasion so he asks aunt Beru or uncle Owen to take the pic.
They strike a pose for the camera, from mid conversation, and there you have it.
Well that's the thinking behind it anyway.
You can find the cut scenes with Biggs and Luke on Tatooine in the A New
Hope Cut Scenes section. It also includes video clips for you to watch!
Also, be sure to see Craig's outstanding gallery of work with Craig Burt's
Paintings, Painting by
Numbers, and also Craig Burt's Cartoons!
You can find other great work at the Featured
Artists section. Enjoy!

November 2006
Comics |
The Official Star Wars Site has
provided a look at more Dark Horse Comics for Star Wars fans this November. Five
generations after Luke Skywalker took up his father's lightsaber, the galaxy is
once again imperiled and hope rests on the shoulders of a young man and his
connection to the Force. In this issue of Star Wars Legacy, a legacy is
revealed, denied, and endangered as Cade Skywalker's friends turn their backs on
him, and he finds himself in league with those he thought were his enemies!
Decisions must be made, and a hero's burden must be taken up or cast aside. The
Jedi, the Sith, and the Empire all want something from Cade, and all he wants is
to be left alone. But in a galaxy on the brink of war there is no place to hide!
Star Wars Legacy #6, by John Ostrander, Jan Duursema, Dan Parsons, and Brad
Anderson is slated for release on November 15. It features a cover by Adam
Hughes.
Despite his acceptance of the Sith ways, Darth Vader is shocked to find
the Empire -- and himself -- complicit in an evil he thought he had put behind
him. A Separatist freedom fighter deals with the realization that the sacrifice
made by his brothers-in-arms has been for nothing -- and that their families are
paying the price for their resistance. The crew of a smuggler's ship is forced
to take sides in a conflict they have sought to avoid -- and which has already
changed the course of all their lives...
The dawn of the Empire plunges
the galaxy into dark times, and every direction leads to danger! Find out more
in the all-new tales told in the unexplored territories of the dark times, in
Star Wars: Dark Times #2, the second of the five-part "The Path to Nowhere"
story, by Wellese Hartley, Mick Harrison, Douglas Wheatley and Ronda Pattison.
It is scheduled for release on November 29.
A new two-part story begins
in Knights of the Old Republic #11 as fugitive Padawan Zayne Carrick and the
crew of the Last Resort devise a plan to nab some much needed cash. On the
banking world of Telerath they set their plot into motion unaware the bounty on
their heads is about to catch up to them. Yet there's more going on than the
schemers or their hunters realize, and when it all blows sky-high an unexpected
reunion will throw Zayne's life on the run into question.
Star Wars:
Knights of the Old Republic #11 is by John Jackson Miller, Brian Ching and
Michael Atiyeh and features cover art by Hoon. It is scheduled for release on
November 29.
In the new year, new Clone Wars action awaits with the
seventh installment of the wildly popular Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures,
digest-sized anthologies in the kinetic, stripped-down style of the Cartoon
Network's Clone Wars micro-series.
Explosive action, white-hot lightsaber
battles, evil schemes, and heroic sacrifices -- it's all here in this fast-paced
volume jam-packed with four wickedly awesome all-ages adventures set in the most
exciting era of Star Wars! The fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance, the
Republic and Confederacy taking their fight from the cold reaches of space to
exotic alien worlds. Don't miss the Jedi make history in their selfless fight
for justice in this full-throttle collection of stories featuring the works of
Matthew and Shawn Fillbach, Chris Avellone, Ryan Kaufman, Jeremy Barlow, Ethen
Beavers and Stewart McKenny. It is scheduled for release on January
17.
Also early next year is the latest collection of Star Wars: Empire
stories in the seventh trade paperback, The Wrong Side of the War. Featuring the
works of Welles Hartley, Davidé Fabbri, Christian Dalla Vecchia and David
Michael Beck, this trade paperback collects issues #36-40 of the
series.
Fresh from the killing fields of Jabiim, where the Empire has
virtually wiped out the populace of that world, Imperial Lieutenant Janek Sunber
is sent to the quiet prison base on Kalist VI. But, unbeknownst to the Empire,
the Rebels have designs on Kalist Base both for its desirable fuel supplies, and
for the presence of a very important prisoner -- one of their own who has
already attracted the interest of Darth Vader. Sunber doesn't know it, but he's
on a collision course with an old friend who is with the Rebels, and he finds
himself wondering which of them is on the wrong side of the war. This collection
is due out on January 17. |

"Commercials
Week"- Day 1 |
In the past, we have had week long
informational events like TIE Week, Empire Cut Scenes Week, Death Star Week, and
Obscure Characters Week. Along the same vain, this week we are offering the
Commercials Week.
These commercials are from the 1970's, 1980's, and beyond. Some of you may
remember them if you are old enough, and some may be new to you. Either way, I
am sure you will enjoy seeing what used to be. We have come a long way with TV
commercials through the years!
To start off the week, I have added 6 new Action Figure, Playset, and
Vehicles commercials from the release of Star Wars in 1977. Many of you know the
film only as A New Hope or Episode IV, but during that time it was just known as
Star Wars. George Lucas added the rest in as the Saga grew. You can find these
commercials over in the Movies Section. Or, you can go
directly to them by going to Star Wars Figures,
Playsets, and Vehicles. Enjoy!
