Han Solo’s towering Wookiee partner and the very embodiment of loyalty and strength. One of the Rebellion’s most revered heroes, Chewbacca is a mechanical genius, remarkable pilot, and skilled combatant. He is also considered to be the conscience of those around him, and it was Chewbacca who convinced Han to return to the Battle of Yavin. Throughout the Galactic Civil War, the Wookiee continued to risk himself to protect Princess Leia, Han, Luke, Lando Calrissian, and even C-3PO.

One of the most courageous heroes of the Rebel Alliance, Chewbacca is a Wookiee native to the forest world of Kashyyyk. Like all Members of his species, he is a lanky, hairy humanoid with keen smell and sight, great strength, and a deep sense of honor. While all Wookiees are physically formidable, both Chewbacca’s size and strength are exceptional even among his own species. When angered, Chewbacca’s ferocity knows no bounds, but he is usually compassionate, sentimental, and affectionate. However, Chewbacca’s most valued attributes are his undying loyalty, his intense sense of honor, and commitment, and his loud conscience.

Like his partner, Han Solo, much of Chewbacca’s past is unknown. He left his homeworld at the age of 50 to explore the galaxy and, according to some sources, eventually found himself enslaved. He was rescued from this plight by Han, and subsequently swore a Wookiee "life debt" to the smuggler. This pledge of fealty gradually evolved into an undying friendship, and Chewbacca participated in many of Han Solo’s early adventures. Unfortunately, the pair eventually earned the ire of Jabba the Hut, who placed a large bounty on both Chewbacca and Han after they dumped a shipment of the crime lord’s precious spice. Soon after, Chewie and Solo found themselves broiled in the Galactic Civil Wars. Reluctantly, they joined Luke Skywalker in rescuing Princess Leia from the Death Star, then safely delivered the hidden plans for that immense battle station to the Rebel Alliance on Yavin 4. During the Battle of Yavin, Chewbacca urged Han to enter the fray, where they saved Luke Skywalker from the evil Darth Vader. Luke subsequently destroyed the Death Star, ending the first chapter in the Galactic Civil War.

The next four years were tumultuous for Chewbacca. He and Han narrowly escaped disaster numerous times and were almost captured by Imperials at the Battle of Hoth. The pair were then betrayed by Lando Calrissian on Cloud City, where Chewbacca was forced to watch as Darth Vader had Solo encased in carbonite. To rescue his friend, Chewie braved the dangers of Jabba the Hut’s palace. Eventually, he and Han were reunited and together they led the ground assault during the Battle of Endor.

In the years that followed the Galactic Civil War, Chewbacca continued to fight oppression throughout the galaxy and served the New Republic faithfully. He was deeply involved in a mission to bring peace to Bakura, battled the forces of Grand Admiral Thrawn, protected Han and Leia’s children from numerous threats, and snatched Solo from enemy hands during the Yevethan crisis. Throughout all his missions and adventures, Chewbacca’s courage has never faltered, and he remains one of the New Republic’s most revered figures.
