CharactersAdmiral Ackbar
The brilliant military strategist who led the Rebel fleet against the second Death Star. Ackbar was once a major political figure on the watery world of Mon Calamari, but when Imperial forces enslaved his people, he was forced into servitude as Grand Moff Tarkins interpreter. Ackbar was eventually rescued by the Rebellion and joined the Alliance. He subsequently recruited a huge number of Mon Calamari pilots and engineers, devised the B-wing starfighter, and placed himself at the forefront of several monumental clashes, including the Battle of Endor. Although most well-known for heading the successful attack on Death Star II, Admiral Ackbars greatest contribution to the Rebel Alliance may have been convincing his own people, the Mon Calamari, to join the Rebel cause. Once they committed to the Rebellion, the Mon Cal donated several powerful star cruisers and hordes of skilled technicians and pilots. Before his promotion to admiral, Ackbar also pioneered the Shantipole Project, which resulted in the versatile B-wing starfighter. Even after the Alliances victory at the Battle of Endor, Ackbar remained a major political and tactical force within the New Republic. As depicted in Heir to the Empire, Ackbar was appointed to the Inner Council and aided in the conflict against Grand Admiral Thrawn. Sadly, he was accused of treason when Thrawn planted evidence suggesting that Ackbar had embezzled funds from the New Republic. Ackbar was eventually cleared of these charges and managed to lead the New Republic forces to victory in the war against the vile Grand Admiral Thrawn. Admiral Ackbar continues to remain a major figure in the expanding Star Wars galaxy and appears in a host of new works, including the Jedi Academy Trilogy. In these tales, Ackbar has battled the reborn Emperor Palpatine, led several assaults against Coruscant, and protected his homeworld from at least one enemy invasion.
