"Purge Scourge"
This painting is more recent than most of these. If I remember it was the first done after seeing Revenge of the Sith and I think it might be the last ROTS painting in the vein of these that I've done. These days I spend most of my time doing commissions and have lost most of the urge to do this style
Star Wars paintings under my own steam.
1. Is almost the beginning and the end of the process for this one. The elements
aren't really based on any actual photo; they are more like the sketches than anything. The painting has a rough sketch like quality because of this. I actually think I might like the sketches more than the painting as a result. Most of the characters in the sketch page made it into the final painting as you can see.
2,2a,2b, 2c. Are just a collection of photos to show the sort of thing you can refer to when doing a picture free from direct photo reference. 2a and 2b are the only pictures I did look at for detail of the characters. 2 is probably the image that gave me the idea of doing more generic Jedi for a change in the first place. 2c I wasn't actually aware of
until looking through photos for this commentary and then I see that he, or someone similar, subconsciously made his way into the painting.
3. Is how it all ended up. It's this sort of painting that makes me wonder if I have any
talent for painting at all when I look at it. Not because it's a particularly bad painting but because it's too 'cartoony' for the style that I like. That is mainly due to the lack of refinement of the figures because it is more like a painted sketch than a painting. For those of you who don't know what it is, it is a somewhat abstract rendering of the Jedi purge; the underhanded wholesale slaughter of the Jedi. Most of them are shown falling as if slain or caught unawares, as they where. The central female Jedi has her hand up as if to say stop or don't. The red and white horizontal band is a representation of a Sith lightsaber blade; if all the other sabers didn't make you see it that way
already.
