Painting by Numbers

Progressive 2Arena Screama.jpg (208921 bytes)
"Arena Screama"

This is an old one; painted in the year 2000 according to it's date! Back in the days when I had a good quality tube of Yellow Ochre. That's a great color for doing the Geonosis landscapes. I should buy another good tube, liked the color very much.

1. Is the very start of the painting. I think it was a photo from an Episode II Toy Fair, though I can't be sure from this distance. At the time I thought it was just illustrating the uses of the figures, but now, I doubt a Mace figure would have been made with that expression on his face and it looks more like a mock-up to throw people off the scent as to what might be coming up. But then, I don't know anything about the toys.

2. Is the only sketch of this painting I can find. A surprise, but not a huge one, because this was back in the days when the aim was to pump out as may paintings as possible in the shortest space of time. That time would be about a week from concept to finish. Even though the sketch is limited in detail all that was needed is there. Most of the details come from the photos used and the background doesn't have many complicated elements in it so the few curved lines suffice.

3. Is the Mace image used. It's a photo of the mini-bust. Of course for the print-out the photo was flipped horizontally to face the direction needed. Looking at the numbering used I perhaps should have had '3' and '3a' as '2' and '2a' because that's the real order of things. You usually have the idea for a painting, then find a few images that might work, then do some sketches. Not the way numbered here. But I guess it doesn't really matter.

3a. This photo is from the Visual Dictionary. I'm not sure if this is the actual photo used, I doubt that book was out then. Looking at the print-out used, it's not the photo. The one used has no legs and Jango's arms in the position in the painting. Where that photo is I don't know. Just looked through the files and can't find it.

4. This scan is the painting about half-finished. I don't think any elements where changed, just more layering of color to be done.

5. The finished painting. Overall it not a bad painting. It looks pretty dramatic, the poses seem to work well for the purpose. You've got the Jedi battling in the background, dust stirred up from the commotion, Jango seizing the moment, the look of pain and determination on Mace's face. The grappling hook action didn't happen in the movie, whether or not it was intended, it made a reasonable painting.
