Secretly manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards in the Seswenna Sector, the Eidolon Strike Cruiser was originally a ship that was never truly intended to exist. It's research, development and construction was entirely a ruse by Sate Pestage, who used the project on paper as a means to secure funding and accumulate wealth for a secret, personal base on Tatooine.

The project was approved by the Empire originally because the premise, while fake, was sound: to upgrade the Strike-class Cruiser, eliminate some of the glaring problems inherent with the otherwise excellent and useful design, and create a modernized ship class that wasn't so vulnerable to breaking apart with a few well-placed torpedo shots. The Eidolon boasted upgraded TIE launch racks that were able to launch TIE/ln starfighters in a very short time.

All the genius of the Eidolon design went into its design and computer models. Looked over by professional shipwrights and military men, it was clearly a revolution in the design of the Strike-class Cruiser concept, and eagerly approved. Once funding was given for the construction of the prototype, however, the genius dried up and the corruption took over.

A 'prototype' was made that was, in reality, little more than a shell of a ship, with inadequate superstructure, drive, computers, and other cut corners. The bulk of the money went to Sate Pestage's accounts, and when the poorly-constructed ship disappeared, presumed broken up and lost on its maiden flight, the Eidolon was considered a failure and the project canceled, the money invested written off with the ship.

The hull and launch rack of the prototype was secretly made and retrofitted into Eidolon Base. The base was located along the edge of the Northern Dune Sea on Tatooine.
